why should you contribute?
Pictures of lady bits in adult magazines and websites are usually selected or even edited for a tidy, desirable appearance. This creates an unrealistic image of what real-life lady bits actually look like. Because of that, many women don't know just how diverse the appearance of real-life lady bits can be. The often causes a strong increase of their existing insecurities.
For instance, it is not uncommon for a young woman to be afraid to wear swimwear in public, because her labia minora are big and therefore their contours will be visible to others. What she is probably unaware of, is that more than half of all women are just like her, in the sense that they also have labia minora that protrude past the labia majora.
As a result of this 'ignorance' and misinformation, the last years have seen a substantial increase in the number of young women considering labiaplasty for purely cosmetic reasons (without functional complaints).
This is a trend we need to reverse, because many women are unaware of the risk of complications associated with this kind of surgery. For example the risk of decreased sexual sensation and an undesirable cosmetic result. Not to mention bleeding, wound dehiscence or scarring.
educational value
For the above mentioned reasons, it is very important that these women can be properly educated by for instance their GP. An important part of this education is showing these women as much different real-life lady bits as possible, so they can form a more objective image of their body.
Gynodiversity is of great importance to this aspect of education, because it enables doctors, other health care providers and the women themselves to show and see the wonderful diversity like never before. Being confronted with the amazing variety, often helps to convince the woman that her lady bits are perfectly normal and become more self-confident.
